Odoo 20 is out: take the Odoo 19 certification now or wait?

By ·Founder & Odoo Consultant··4 min read

Take the Odoo 19 functional certification now if you are ready, because Odoo Learn still lists the Odoo 19 Functional Certification as the current exam. Waiting for an Odoo 20 exam only makes sense if you have no date in mind and no need for the credential soon.

Odoo 20 was released on September 24, 2026, so many people planning the exam are asking the same thing. This article gives you a simple way to decide and a plan for the weeks before the exam.

Should I take the Odoo 19 certification now or wait for Odoo 20?

Start from what is published today. Odoo Learn lists the Odoo 19 Functional Certification as the current exam. Nothing you prepare for it is wasted if a newer exam follows, because the work is mostly about understanding how the apps fit together.

Take it now if:

  • you are applying for consultant roles and want the credential on your resume
  • you already work in Odoo 18 or 19 and know the main apps
  • you can set aside a few focused weeks to prepare

Wait only if:

  • you have no deadline and want to learn Odoo 20 first
  • your employer has told you which version to certify on

If you are unsure, check Odoo Learn for the current exam list before you book. That page is the source of truth, not a blog post.

Will my Odoo 19 knowledge still matter in Odoo 20?

Yes, for the most part. The core flows stay recognizable from one major version to the next. A sales order still becomes a delivery and an invoice. A purchase order still becomes a receipt and a vendor bill. Inventory routes, accounting entries and access rights still follow the same logic.

What changes between versions is usually the interface, some settings and a few new features. A consultant who understands why a flow works can learn those changes in days. A consultant who memorized menu clicks has to start over every release.

That is also the best argument for not waiting. Learning the concepts now is the same work you would do for any later exam.

How do I prepare for the Odoo 19 functional exam?

The full plan is in our article on Odoo 19 certification preparation (https://www.praxio.pro/blog/odoo-19-certification-preparation). Here is the short version.

  1. Pick the apps you will be tested on and list them. Typically this means Sales, CRM, Purchase, Inventory, Accounting and Settings.
  2. For each app, walk one document from start to finish in a test database. For example, create a quotation, confirm it, deliver it and invoice it.
  3. Explain each step out loud: what Odoo creates, which record changes and why.
  4. Take practice questions by app, and read the explanation after every answer, right or wrong.
  5. Repeat the questions you missed until you can answer them and explain them.

If you are new to the field and wondering where the certification fits in a career, read how to become an Odoo consultant (https://www.praxio.pro/blog/how-to-become-odoo-consultant). The exam is one step. Client work is the other.

What does a worked example look like?

Take a question you might meet on a Purchase topic: a company orders 100 units, receives 60, and the vendor bill shows 100. What should the accountant do?

A learner who memorized answers might guess. A learner who walked the flow knows the answer:

  • the purchase order says 100 ordered
  • the receipt says 60 received
  • the vendor bill says 100 billed

The quantities do not match, so a three-way match would flag the bill. The next step is to confirm with the vendor whether the remaining 40 units are still coming, then pay for what was received or wait for the rest. If you get it wrong the first time, the useful move is to find out which of the three documents you misread, not to reread the whole chapter.

That habit of finding the exact gap is what the exam rewards, and it is what clients pay for.

How many weeks do I need?

It depends on your starting point. Someone who already configures Odoo at work may need two to four weeks of focused revision. Someone who is new to Odoo should plan longer and spend the first weeks building and breaking things in a test database before touching practice questions.

Whatever the length, spread the revision out. Short sessions on most days work better than one long weekend.

How do I practice for the exam?

The most efficient revision is the one aimed at your weak spots. Review in Praxio brings back the questions you got wrong first and right later, so your time goes to what you do not yet know instead of what you already do. Take a quiz on one app, then open Review the next day and work through what came back.
